In 2005 Bob Kellam, retired from the U.S. EPA and managing his small urban farm, became an Extension Master Gardener Volunteer (EMGV) in Wake County. Since then, he has provided local leadership to the EMGV Wake County program, as well as leading the statewide EMGV Association. He has also chaired the NC EMGV endowment. Continue reading

JC Raulston Arboretum members. volunteers, and stakeholders are very pleased to announce that Arlene Calhoun has been named Assistant Director of the JC Raulston Arboretum at NCSU.

Arlene has a background as an executive with experience in direct marketing, business operations, and communications with a focus on building revenue streams. After 15 years in the business world, Arlene was ready for new challenges.  She began as a volunteer with the JCRA, helping to gather needed data to analyze our rental program and was subsequently hired as the JCRA Volunteer & Membership Coordinator. Dr. Ricardo Hernández of Horticulture Sustainable Energy

Dr. Ricardo Hernández is originally from the north part of Mexico in the state of Chihuahua. He came to the United States for his education. He earned a Undergraduate degree in Agronomy from New Mexico State University, Masters of Science in Entomology (biocontrol) from Texas A&M University, and Doctorate degree in Plant Physiology with a minor in Ag & Biosystems Engineering from the University of Arizona. DR. TOM RANNEY elected ASHS Fellow

ranneyElection as a Fellow of the ASHS Society is the highest honor that can bestow members, in recognition of truly outstanding contributions to horticulture and the ASHS Society.

Dr. Ranney’s research is focused in development of new nursery and bioenergy crops with greater adaptability, pest resistance, and commercial potential; enhancement of production efficiency and quality of crops; performance of basic research in plant science, cytogenetics, and reproductive biology.

perkins-veazieThe ASHS Outstanding Researcher Award recognizes a horticultural crops scientist who has had an outstanding record in research on one or more horticultural crops and in one or more areas of horticultural research for a period of 10 or more years.

Dr. Perkins-Veazie’s research areas cover farm to fork fresh storage, quality, food safety, and phytonutrient content of fresh or minimally processed fruits and vegetables. Most research is in areas of caneberry shelf life and watermelon uses as phytonutrient sources for improving human health.
