The Culinary Horticulture Club

The Culinary Horticulture Club at NC State is a newly established student-led group focused on bringing together students and community members who have a deep interest in the history, sociology, science, and culinary attributes of horticultural crops. As a club we aim to delve deep into the rich history and background of these crops through discussions, readings, field trips to restaurants/markets, and cooking together as a group. In the end, this club is about enjoying food together as a group. There are no requirements for joining other than being curious about food and willing to try something new and different every now and then. Continue reading

Dr. Ricardo Hernández is originally from the north part of Mexico in the state of Chihuahua. He came to the United States for his education. He earned a Undergraduate degree in Agronomy from New Mexico State University, Masters of Science in Entomology (biocontrol) from Texas A&M University, and Doctorate degree in Plant Physiology with a minor in Ag & Biosystems Engineering from the University of Arizona. Even when times are hard … Horticulture is Still the Best Career to Choose

In our last article, we shared some of the recruitment activities that Helen Kraus, Lee Ivy, and Lis Meyer have taken on to help keep the HortPack strong. I am glad to share that we have 17 new and transfer 4-year (BS) students and nine 2-year (AAS) students. This keeps our numbers at, or just above, where we have been over the last few years – a total of 112 students in the 4-year (BS) and 28 students in the 2-year (AAS) programs. Continue reading

Kilgore Nano Vineyard

Sara Spayd and the Nano VineyardDr. Sara Spayd, the viticulture professor in the Department of Horticultural Science, collaborated with the landscape design construction studio (HS 401) to build a grape vine species demonstration at Kilgore Hall. She asked them to design a wooden trellis where she can showcase examples of three grape species for use in her viticulture class (HS 423). Continue reading
