Dr. John Dole receives 2014 SAF Alex Laurie Award

A top teacher and researcher — and sought-after mentor within the classroom and floral industry — is the 2014 recipient of the Society of American Florists’ (SAF) Alex Laurie Award. The honor was presented to John Dole, Ph.D., head of the Department of Horticultural Science at North Carolina State University, in Marco Island, FL.
Nick Basinger Wins Best Student Oral Viticulture Presentation
Nick Basinger won the award for best student oral viticulture presentation from the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and from the Eastern Section of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture. His presentation “Effect of Herbicide Strip Width and Late-Season Weed Competition on Winegrape Vine Growth, Berry Quality, and Yield. Nicholas T. Basinger, Katie Jennings, David Monks, Sara Spayd and Wayne Mitchem, North Carolina State University, Raleigh” was given at the joint National and Eastern Section Annual Conference of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture held June 25-26 in Austin, TX.
Dominic A. Gillooly (MS) 2nd place for the Norman F. Childers M.S. Graduate Student Paper Award
Dominic A. Gillooly, Masters student with Thomas G. Ranney was awarded 2nd place for the Norman F. Childers M.S. Graduate Student Paper Award for “Ploidy Levels and Relative Genome Sizes of Species, Hybrids, and Cultivars of Kalmia.” At Southern Region American Society for Horticultural Science in Dallas, TX, held Jan. 31 – Feb. 2.

Christine Bradish, PhD student won 1st place for the Warren S. Barham PhD Graduate Student Paper Competition for “Phenotypic Evaluations of Yield and Fruit Quality Traits in Segregating Black Raspberry (Rubus Occidentalis L.) Populations in North Carolina.” At the Southern Region ASHS in Dallas, TX, held Jan. 31 – Feb. 2, 2014
