Horticultural Science Announces Spring 2016 Seminars

The department of Horticultural Science has announced its spring seminar lineup for 2016. The speakers range in diversity and background and include professional gardeners, landscape designers, award-winning teachers, aspiring researchers and teachers, and horticultural entrepreneurs. The series kicks off with a talk from Frank Hyman on “The Beauty of the Built Garden.”Hyman is an NC State trained horticulturalist who studied under Drs. Will Hooker and JC Raulston. He writes for several publications and operates Cottage Garden Landscaping. The seminar series includes talks from several departmental graduate students on topics ranging from genotyping tools, weed science, tomato breeding, molecular markers in watermelon, to vegetable crops in North Carolina. Widely anticipated is the talk from Bryce Lane who will speak about “Becoming a Better Teacher: Roadmap to Greatness.”  Lane, a gifted teacher and award winning professor, retired as the departmental undergraduate coordinator in 2013 after 30+ years of service. He gives talks all over the country and is a regular at the JC Raulston Arboretum. A special treat will be the presentation by Chatham County Extension Agent, Debbie Roos, on “The Pollinator Garden.”  Finally, Paul Zorner will conclude with an enlightening presentation entitled “Just Go Away: Using Digital Biology to Find Naturally Occurring Insect Repellant to Protect Humans, Crops, and Animals.”  Zorner has extensive international experience and has been a founder of several agricultural and renewable energy-based companies that have also had a specific focus on using these platforms to provide local food and economic security.
